i had unprotected sex with a HIV guy 10 weeks ago. 6.5 weeks after the exposure, i did a OraQuick test, and it was negative. would like to know how the accuracy is like? I will be doing a test at 12th week, but currently very worried. Have been so worried that i have been thinking about it every minute. please advise

Welcome to the Forum. The good news is thateven if your partner had HIV, less than 1% of sexual exposures lead to infection. The test you had would have detected over 95% of recently acquired HIV infections. You o not need to wait until 12 weeks for complete assurance, at 8 weeks your test will provide completely reliable informatio

thanks doc. last question. Have u ever read or known any encounters of people getting tested NEGATIVE at the 6th week using OraQuick test, but turned out to be positive at the 12th week? Thanks doc for your advice
I have never had this happen.IT has happened in the past to others, that is the reason for the recommendation. Please no more "what if" or "have you ever" questions- they serve little purpose.EWH

Hi doc, just did a test at 10.5 weeks. Is negative. So is that conclusive? Cos I read from some sites that recommend 12 weeks
HOOK
These results are conclusive an should be believed. You did not get HIV from the exposure you described. There is no need for further testing. EWH

Finally, when can you be tested and be sure you did not get HIV.the answer is at 8 weeks. For all practical purposes the HIV antibody tests current in use provide accurate information on the presence or absence of HIV infection in virtually everyone at 8 weeks following exposure. The recommendations for testing at 3 and even 6 months are the result of two factors- data from older tests no longer used (you really do not need to worry about which generation of tests you were tested with, at this time virtually all tests are far more sensitive that they were even 2-3 years ago when the 3 month recommendation was made) and secondly, the fact that some, mostly governmental agencies which have to provide recommendations for virtually everyone without the sort of interactions such as those you get with your doctor or on personalized sites such as this one, feel they cannot "afford" to be wrong and therefore make recommendations and guidelines which leave most people unnecessarily nervous for 4-6 weeks longer than the 6-8 weeks it takes virtually everyone to develop HIV antibodies.
